We began mat work, or gymnastics today. We prefer to call it mat work because gymnastics uses different apparatus and the gymnast will fly though the air. We use no apparatus and the students always remain in contact with the floor.
We remind the students that performing these movements is not a race. The students must fight the urge to go fast and try to beat their neighbor down the mat. Gymnastics is judged on form, speed has nothing to do with it. Students will learn 3-5 new movements per day. For today, we learned: Log roll Egg roll Spiderman (grades 4 & 5 only) Crab walk (forward, backward, sideways) Seal walk Ask your son/daughter which is their favorite!
