Another crazy day in PE! Immigration Day changed the schedules of some classes and kept others from coming to PE at all today. Then, as usual for this spring, rain kept us indoors.
Grades 3-5 continued with the 10-Man mat race. This is the cooperative game where students must work together to move two gym mats the length of the gym without anybody touching the floor. It requires teamwork, respecting opinions and ideas, and cooperation. Some groups were very successful. Others were not. Discuss with your child why they were or weren't able to complete the task. Grades K-2 started with Army tag and then did some activities with the parachute. We hope the weather clears long enough for us to do our spring run. Have a great holiday weekend!

A bit of a crazy day today. Both gyms were occupied for all or parts of the day due to the Spring Concert rehearsal and the art show. Normally we would go outside on a day like this, but the weather started as "iffy" then rained hard. Here's a rundown of the day.
4th and 5th grades started with elbow tag and ended with 10-person mat race. This is a cooperative game where 10 kids stand on a mat and have to work together to get the mats across to the other side of the gym without any of the 10 team members touching the floor. It takes a lot of teamwork and cooperation. Ask your 4th or 5th grader how their team did today! Kindergarten classes played with the large parachute. Third grade students in Mr. McElwey's, Mrs Misuraca's, and Mrs. Herwck's class had to have PE class in their classroom, unfortunately. Students in Mrs. Rauf's, Mrs. Mitchell's, and Mrs. Kibrick's class were able to get outside for most of their class and have free play with playground balls, jumpropes, or hula hoops. Mrs. Mulholland's, Mrs. Konas', Mrs. Carey's and Mrs. Sharlow's classes used the parachute in the gym after the rehearsal was over. All other classes watched the concert rehearsal during PE class. We will have our large gym back on Friday! Yesterday we went outside and finally were able to continue with the hurdles. We had 4 competetive lanes where students could race each other. We also had 4 non-competetive lanes where students could just practice jumping over the hurdles. Students could go between the two different levels of competition as much as they wanted.
Kindergarten did the same course, but instead of jumping hurdles they did more of an obstacle course. They had to run around the first hurdle, then go through a tunnell, and finally jump over a low hurdle to the end. We will be outside today! Might be the last day of the week though as the weather doesn't look good. Thanks! We stayed inside due to rain last night and projected rain for today, although it never came. We played Pin Knockdown.
The plan for Tuesday is to go outside and continue our hurdle unit from last week. It will be in relay race style with baton handoffs. Hopefully the weather cooperates on Thursday as both of our gyms are being used for the concert and art show. Otherwise, PE might have to take place in their classrooms. Not the best scenario. Have a good night! Before going outside today, students were shown the following video. It talks about the importance of wearing a helmet and how to size a helmet. The video focused on bicycles but our discussion included skateboarding, ATVs, dirt bikes/motorcycles, ice skating, and rollerblading. Please continue this important conversation at home as helmets are nearly 90% effective in preventing serious head injuries.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9OSVeMVJDIk Students were able to get on the field on Tuesday for free play. We could use most of the field, some areas were off limits for being too mushy/wet. These next few days will hopefully dry it all up.
We are continuing our track & field unit today with hurdles. Students will watch a brief video on how to hurdle and then we will head out on the field to give it a try. The link for the video is below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T97kkzRMEAY The school budget and capital project both passed! Thank you to those that came out and voted! We are very excited about the future improvements to our playing fields and track! The students and community will greatly benefit from these improvements! We had to stay indoors once again. We can't remember a spring with such limited outdoor access. Although the weather is supposed to be dry the next few days, the wet field conditions may still keep us from going out. Be assured we'd rather be outside this time of year than inside. We will keep our fingers crossed and hope the field is dry enough to continue our track unit.
Today we played Frisbee Relay Race. Ask your child how to play this game! Many of the students are learning how to throw a Frisbee. If you get a chance, and have a Frisbee at home, take them outside and play catch with them! Apologies, as the site has been down a few days.
On Wednesday the students had to stay indoors. They played Hula Hut Pin Knockdown. Here's a video that shows how to make a hula hut. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5VrXdSc7y0&t=2 8s Yesterday the students were able to get outside, although the field is still somewhat wet in areas. They began with a small lap then were allowed free choice. Their choices were flying discs, playground balls, or hula hoops. Today students are playing Castle Crashers outside on the field. Here's another video to explain how it's played. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWbTnCqIdW0 Next week looks to be warm and dry starting on Tuesday. We hope to continue our track unit. Thanks! Due to the unseasonable teamperatures, we stayed inside the last two days. We played Pyramid Battle. Students in grades 4-5 multiplied. Students in grades 3 chose between adding and multiplying. Students in grades 1-2 added. Students in kindergarten compared numbers with higher number advancing.
Here's a clilp: http://www.peuniverse.com/Videos/detail.cfm?post_id=819 The weather was nice on Thursday so all classes were able to go outside to finally continue the track unit. We set up relay races again in an oval pattern. The children did a very nice job! Ask them how their team finished.
The weather looks to be keeping us inside today and into next week. Track will continue when we can get outside. In the mean time, we continue to play games inside that focus on various skills like throwing, catching, strategizing, running, jumping, etc. Today's game was the same as Wednesday's, Team Sink the Ship. Ask them what was different about this version compared to the old version. Reminder! Ice cream social taking place tonight at school. Hope you can make it! |
