The PE staff at Scott M. Ellis would like to thank all our families for a great, active 4 months of school. Enjoy the holiday respite and we will see you in 2016!

Hungry Hungry Hippos was quite a hit today with all grades! The game involves a lot of cooperation and team work in order to be successful. Be sure to ask your child about their experience playing this game!
After the holiday break the classes of Coach Haller and Coach Conrow will be back in the MP room by themselves. We have spent the last 6 weeks with Coach Kiefer and Coach Bruce's classes in the "Big" gym for gymnastics, the obstacle course, and bowling. Students who have Coach Haller and Coach Conrow will begin volleyball after the break. Students who have Coach Bruce and Coach Kiefer will begin basketball after the break. Thanks! Due to the short holiday week, we are doing different activities each of the three days this week. Today we played a very popular game called Pin Knockdown. We stress proper throwing mechanics in this game. One big mistake children, especially grades k-2 make, is stepping with the wrong foot. A right handed thrower should step toward their target with their left, or opposite foot and vice-versa.
On Tuesday we will play a game called Hungry Hungry Hippos. Yes, this is modeled after the game we all played when we were kids. Be sure to ask them about when they get home on Tuesday. Thanks! http://www.parenting.com/gallery/18-fun-active-indoor-activities?page=0
Some ideas to get our children active at home. http://albany.kidsoutandabout.com/
This website lists resources for kids and families to be active within the Capital District. Looking for something to do? Perhaps this site can provide you with ideas. Thanks! We continued disco bowling today. This will run through Wednesday. Thursday is a tough day for PE class because the large gym will be setup for the annual winter concert. That means up to 4 classes will be in the MP room (small gym) for PE at one time. This simply isn't enough space to be overly active that day, but we will make the best of the accommodations.
Thanks! http://www.raisesmartkid.com/all-ages/1-articles/13-the-good-and-bad-effects-of-tv-on-your-kid
Article discusses effects of television on young children. Our Scott M. Ellis building is holding two separate drives. First, the school is collecting both cat and dog food for those animals without a home. Donations can be dropped off in front of the main office. This drive is for food only.
Secondly, the school is collecting hats and gloves/mittens for those in need. Students can bring any donations to their teacher. Items brought in will be placed on the tree in the main hallway. Please send in only new items. On a personal note, the dollar store in Greenville has a nice selection. Thanks for your help with these worthy causes! Today all students began our annual bowling unit. We set up 12 lanes in our large gym. There's a lot for kids to like during this unit including music, a big screen displaying Charlie Brown and his Peanuts gang dancing, and a disco strobe light that provides the only light. It's a kid favorite! Ask them about it!
Students should know the words "strike" and "spare". Ask them the difference between these terms. Bowling will continue through next Wednesday. Students took a break on Friday from the obstacle course centers. Today we continued with them. However, 2 of the obstacles were changed, and 5 new obstacles were added. Ask your child about what changes were made and what new obstacles were added!
