Sorry for the delay in posting to the blog. The site had been down for a few days and wouldn't allow us to post. We're back up and running now.
Today students practice kicking off a tee. They kickoff to their partner who is standing about 20-40 feet away, depending on the grade. After their partner catches or picks up the ball, they race down and try to two-hand tag them before they cross the white line. Students seemed to enjoy this activity. We will continue football for the rest of this week!

Students were shown how to throw a football today. Key elements discussed when throwing a football were:
1) Standing perpendicular to the person you're throwing to, or, as we told the kids, standing sideways to begin throw. Thrower's chest shouldn't be facing the target. 2) Stepping with the opposite foot. If you throw with your right then step with your left, and vice-versa. Standing sideways helps with this because then you are forced to step with the front (opposite) foot. 3) Make an "L" with your arm by holding the ball up slightly above your ear. 4) Grip the ball with 2 fingers on the laces and the thumb on the opposite side. Most students who did not run for a time yesterday were able to do so today. Thanks. Students ran the timed fall run today. Below is the distance for each student:
Kindergarten/1st grade - Run 1/3 mile 2nd/3rd - 2/3 mile 4/5 - 1 mile We talk about not running too fast in the beginning. We do use the word "pace". Most students are able to run the entire distance, which is the expectation. After running there was a small amount of time for students to throw Nerf footballs back and forth with a partner. For those students who were absent today, or on the field trip, they will run the timed run on Wednesday. Yesterday students in grades 3-5 played 4 vs. 4 lacrosse. Instead of goals on the end of each field, we place cones. Students must work together passing and moving trying to hit the cone with a shot. We do not play with goalies due to safety reasons.
Yesterday students in grades k-2 used the Scoops. Yesterday was the last day for Scoops. Today the students will play a game outside called 4-Corners. Next week, students will do their timed spring run. Kindergarten/1st grade - Run 1/3 mile 2nd/3rd - 2/3 mile 4/5 - 1 mile Thanks! Students in grades 3-5 continued one-on-one battles using lacrosse sticks. One student rolls the ball while the other two students race towards the ball trying to be the first one to scoop it up. Whoever scoops the ball first is on offense. The student who did not scoop the ball is on defense. The offense makes a move trying to get free from the defender and gets one shot at a goal (hitting the cone). After the shot is taken, students rotate and play begins again. Students in grades 3-5 will begin small lacrosse games tomorrow in a 4 vs. 4 match. Googles and gloves are always worn.
Students in grades k-2 used the Scoops. Hula hoops are place a distance apart from each other. Students practice throwing using the Scoop by trying to get the ball in the hoops. This game is similar to the format used in horseshoes where teammates stand on opposite ends of the hoops. Have a good night! |
